Hundreds of judges with extremely high social security approval ratings have awarded at least $100 billion worth of Social Security Disability benefits within only 7 years.
According to the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, judges with an 80 percent approval rate or higher awarded billions of dollars to at least 140,000 claimants in 2009. These numbers suggest a possible excess in the awarding of disability benefits.
Rep. James Lankford of Oklahoma expressed concern over this trend. Lankford said that the wrongful awarding of benefits jeopardizes the SSDI program as a whole. The Social Security and Medicare Board of Trustees predicted the exhaustion of the SSDI program by 2016.
